Comfortable ol’ Adelaide

Listening to the radio last night while driving home from work I tuned in to 5AA to hear Ken ‘KG” Cunningham and Tony Cornes talking about the success of the television show ‘Postcards’. They thought part of it’s success could be attributed to it being a ‘comforting’ show about South Australia and also because South Australian’s are so loyal to their State.
They continued talking about how the people of South Australia dislike change, and that as a result, many of those from the eastern states who have come to South Australia to try and shake it up a bit have more often than not been told to go back from where they came. They spoke of this phenomenon in glowing terms, praising the residents of South Australia for keeping the ‘baddies’ out and saving the State from the clutches of evil.
While liking things safe, comfortable and predictable can sometimes be a good thing, clinging to the safety of certianty can also be restrictive and dangerous. I suppose many other smaller cities and towns feel the same way about the effect that new or different ideas, or ways of life will have on their existing culture and community. However, change can open doors of opportunity, increase efficiency and productivity, improve morale, and promote imagination and thinking.
