While regular viewers of NBC’s Heroes can attest to the shows engaging yet sometimes convoluted plot involving everyday people who acquire superpowers, it was refreshing to get some sage advice in the episode “Building 26” from chief bad guy/psycho killer Sylar that can be applied to business, marketing and pretty much anything else in life.

1. Always have an objective.
2. Know your end game before you lift your hand.
3. Keep a clear head — emotions make you sloppy.
4. Understand your motivation — always know what you want.

Failing to apply Lesson #1 when planning marketing activities or advertising campaigns often can result in messy, poorly thought out creative that does next to nix.

An easy way to avoid this is to write a well thought out brief before starting a project or campaign. That way you can make sure it ticks all the boxes and delivers real ROI instead of just pissing away large chunks of your budget.
